Apple Bug Friday: Static Software Update Spinner

Filed under: Apple, Technology — sausage @ 12:22 pm

Here’s a really pedantic bug I found in Mac OS X 10.4.2 Software Update: while you are installing more than one update if you reorder the list of updates by clicking on one of the column headings the spinner’s (the clock-like circle to the left of Quicktime in the first figure), which is a visual indication of which update is currently installing, position remains static. It doesn’t move when the list is reordered, so in the second figure it now appears that iTunes is being installed.

The Saga of w800i

Filed under: Technology — Azeari @ 4:14 pm

It has now been a week since I entered the world of 2.5G telephony by upgrading my mobile to one of the new w800i Walkman phones. Like any impulsive and expensive purchase, it has had its upsides as well as its downsides …

Things that have impressed me so far:

  • form factor
    • compared to Nokia 3310
      • my previous phone was a 113mm x 48mm x 22mm bar of soap, weighing 133g
      • the w800i is a 100mm x 46mm x 20.5mm bar of soap, weighing 99g
    • compared to most 3G phones
  • radio
    • 4zZz, oh how I’ve missed you
    • of course this doesn’t work in the tunnel between Brunswick St and Central…
  • camera
    • I’m not that great a photographer, and the convenience of a 2Mpix camera phone suits me

      fine

    • flash works very well, although it is very bright (people don’t like to have it shining in

      their eyes)

Things that have caused me hassles:

  • User Manual
    • Unable to download the user guide from Sony-Ericsson’s JavaScript-laden website, even in

      IE

  • MMS

List of data accounts full. Delete unused accounts and try again.

    • I think Vodafone need to have a chat to Brightpoint. Why should a phone arrive pre-configured for Telstra WAP, with no room to download Vodafone’s account settings?
    • it took me ages to figure out how to delete data accounts, to make room for the Vodafone PXT and GPRS settings
  • MP3 file manager

This problem might be caused by using the wrong PC software. Please use the Disc2Phone software to
transfer your music files to your phone.

  • recharging very slow
    • according to the setup instructions, it should take about 2.5 hours to fully charge the battery on first use
    • so far I have not managed to charge the battery to 100%, even leaving it on charge overnight
  • battery life
    • miles better than the 3310 of course, but walking around listening to the radio or mp3’s all the time does chew through the battery

disillusions of grandeur and a range of other psychotic symptoms, but she is one
tough cookie.
